Simply, we take the ovaries from a cow or sheep at or very soon after slaughter, extract the eggs and then follow the normal procedures for IVF production of embryos. Ovaries can be collected on farm or at the abattoir. For salvage of Johnes positive animals, please see the Beef IVF page.
A recent example was a British Blue cow that had permanently injured her right hind leg. She was euthanised on farm and her ovaries were taken back to our lab where 10 embryos were successfully frozen for the farmer.
