Case Study on Lameness in Sheep.
‘Farmer A’
Based near Chepstow, 440 breeding ewes, mixed breeds, started using footvax at the end of 2024 due lameness levels >10%
Reduced antibiotic usage by nearly 50% in the last year
“Like many farmers, I have been concerned about rising antibiotic use over the past several years and the associated risk of antibiotic resistance. Since I started using Footvax 12 months ago, my total antibiotic usage has dropped by almost 50%. I now spend far less time treating lame sheep, making this an all-round win for me.”
Cost of footvax £1.60/dose – initial year 3 doses, £4.80
Cost of Draxxin £5.19/ewe + Metacam £1.65 = £6.84 per each lameness case
Using footvax will help reduce labour involved with lameness cases, reduce antibiotic usage and improve performance of your flock

Vaccine schedule: 2 doses 6 weeks apart, booster at 5-6 months or when lameness levels start to rise again. Lame sheep are the indication for when to booster as it shows immunity levels are dropping. Full effects of the vaccine are seen two years into vaccinating but farms see great improvements after the initial course. Gradually intervals between vaccinations get longer.
Still important to use as part of the five point plan: quarantine, treat ASAP, cull repeat offenders, avoid spread, use vaccines
